It was in 1910 Alabama (a state in the States). The fields were planted with cotton—nothing but cotton. Then one day the boll weevils (棉象鼻虫) swarmed in. When they were gone there was no cotton left. There were no crops to sell. What were Alabama’s farmers going to do? How could they make a living? They solved the problem by planting a variety of crops-corn and hay, tobacco and peanut (花生), sugar cane and fruit.
Alabama still grows more cotton than any other crop, but the boll weevils taught the farmers a valuable lesson—not to depend on a single crop. The farmers were so grateful(thankful) that they built a monument (纪念碑) to the cotton-eating bug.
